Capital Area Food Bank understands that while food is essential, it takes more than food to solve hunger as it is often part of a much larger problem. Issues surrounding employment, health and housing can all contribute to the
conditions that cause food insecurity. To address the root causes of hunger and inequity in the region, Capital Area Food Bank’s mission is to focus on addressing hunger today while also piloting innovative models that will create longer-term food security for tomorrow. These approaches are part of a new model called Food+ that expands beyond a traditional food provider network to test a variety of pilot projects that “bundle” food with other critical services such as health care, skills development, job training and more. The goal is to create places where people can come for food and find additional services that have the potential to transform lives.
As the leading hunger relief organization in our region, Capital Area Food Bank provides equitable access to food for individuals struggling with hunger and food insecurity. Each year, with the help of farmers, wholesalers, restaurants and community members, Capital Area Food Bank sources and distributes more than 50 million meals to almost half a million area residents. With over 400+ nonprofit partners, Capital Area Food Bank’s food assistance network includes faith-based organizations, food pantries, soup kitchens, emergency shelters, senior programs, daycare centers and other nonprofits in the community, where they receive food and health education materials from the food bank to feed the people they serve.

Capital Area Food Bank’s programs aim to remove the burden of food costs for people seeking skills development, integrate food into healthcare settings to promote disease prevention and increase access and affordability to food
Capital Area Food Bank helps 10 percent of our region receive food when they need it
Capital Area Food Bank not only distributes food but also works with multiple partners to address the root causes of food insecurity

She managed the University through a weather-related crisis related to the operation of its steam plant and is now leading a modernization effort for the system. Dubroy is simultaneously leading an overhaul that includes the improvement of Howard University’s core network, as part of a partnership with IBM, and is installing a new, University-wide Enterprise Resource Planning system.
She was named in 2021 as Washington Business Journal’s ‘Women Who Mean Business’, 2017 as CEO of the Year in the Triangle region and to the 40 Under 40: Excellence in Leadership list by the Triangle Business Journal.
In response to concerns regarding public safety and emergency management, Dr. Dubroy has created an institutional training series to prepare stakeholders for high-alert scenarios. Statistics for federally-mandated reported crimes and incidents on campus have declined over her tenure and the Department of Public Safety has fully introduced Bison S.A.F.E., a mobile app that gives stakeholders multiple options for contacting campus safety officers, reporting incidents, and tracking covid mitigation efforts and statistics all in real-time.
Under her leadership, Howard University has experienced significant growth in its financial outlook and opportunities for optimization. The university was recognized for its work to improve its financial aid standing with the Department of Education, being removed from Heightened Cash Monitoring status in less than a year. Record-breaking fundraising, combined with gains in auxiliary revenue earnings and cost reductions, have allowed the university greater latitude to invest in people and resources. In 2021, Howard launched the Workday platform to create easier processes for employee onboarding, training, and

30-year veteran of the United States Marine Corps

Born in Ghana West Africa
Kate D. Scoffield
As a mom of three boys, who all played soccer growing up, Kate continues to give back by supporting 40 young boys in Ghana with their schooling and soccer training. Her goal is to bring a team to the US for a college showcase to help them realize their dreams of playing at the collegiate level.
Passionate about giving back to her community, Kate has spent the last three years volunteering with the USO, where she helps with shift duties, unit support and all the family events the USO puts on, such as Bingo, Bunko, Project Elf, Halloween Haunted Center, Movies on the Lawn, Tree Lighting and National Night Out, to name a few. Kate also volunteers with the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention, where she helps to drive awareness and education, and is the lead organizer for this year’s Out of the Darkness Walk.
We are honored to recognize Kate D. Scoffield as our first KPMG Community Champion. Kate’s community efforts were celebrated at opening night at the Washington Capitals hockey game on October 13th at Capital One Arena.
During his military career, James flew Black Hawk helicopters in Korea and trained other US Army aviators as a night vision goggle instructor pilot. He served on the Army Staff in the Office of the Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations and Plans, and was later selected to serve as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of the Army. James is still an avid pilot and recently completed an orientation flight in an F-16 fighter jet. James is always looking for his next adventure.
Extending the credit union philosophy of “People Helping People,” James volunteers for other business groups in the community. He serves on the board of directors for the US Chamber of Commerce and the Northern Virginia Technology Council.
Under James’s leadership, PenFed has earned many awards as an employer and a community leader such as the Canine Companions for Independence’s Hearts & Heroes Award for raising assistance dogs to transform the quality of life for people with disabilities and the Volunteer Alexandria’s Large Business Philanthropist Award for supporting charitable organizations and events throughout Northern Virginia.
We are honored to recognize James Schenck as our November Community Champion. James is President and CEO of PenFed Credit Union, American’s second-largest federal credit union. James also serves as CEO of the PenFed Foundation, which has provided more than $55 million in financial support to military service members, veterans, families, and support networks through programs on
